Caulfield Cup: Sensational But Disappointing
The 130th Caulfield Cup should have seen 66 years of hoodoo thwarted by the lightly raced gelding: Maldivian. But, what must have only been minutes before the start, the Zabeel gelding reared at least twice in the barriers sustaining a campaign ending blow. With blood pouring from a gash on his neck, he looked more like a Ranyhyn come from a Kresh attack. Needless to say the Kresh in this instance, being the horse's agitation and a clamp in the barrier. So with blood streaming from the gash, he was lead away saddleless and the Caulfield Cup was the weaker for it. The fave gone, how quickly the Gods turn. Gone too, his chance to prove that he indeed should claim the title of Master. Leaving Kavanagh to walk the long lonely blood trail of what will not be for 2007. And O'reilly took his title, but then I never doubted it once the sensational happened. It left this Maldivian devotee just wanting more.
It's better to have tried and failed than never to have tried at all they say. And it is true. Bring on the Autumn and bring on the showdown.
